The Story of Baker's Nursery
Baker’s Nursery occupies property that was originally a
‘Kings grant’ to the Elliot family, a prominent Low country family, in
colonial times. The property, or portion which remained, was owned by Elliott
descendents. The deed could be traced to the original ’Kings grant’.
The property was purchased in 1985 by John Baker, a retired U.S. Army Master
Sergeant, for the purpose of starting a landscape nursery. John was in the
landscape business at the time, living and working on Fripp Island. John
realized the need for a nursery to service the Hilton Head and Beaufort area,
thus the conception of Baker's Nursery.
Nursery operations began in 1986, on five acres, by John and his wife Margean.
In 1995 operations were expanded by eight additional acres.
Baker’s Nursery specializes in ground cover, annuals, perennials, ornamental
grasses, shrubs, and small trees - all of which are best suited for the Lowcountry and coastal environments.
Gary and Charline Baker, along with their three children, Amanda, Matt and
Chris, moved to the Lowcountry
in April 1995 and became apprentices to the nursery. Gary and Charline
enrolled in horticulture classes in Beaufort, SC. The children attended
Thomas Heyward academy in Ridgeland at the time.
In 1998 Gary and Charline purchased the nursery. They remain the current
proprietors.
